The Embassy of the United States and the Instituto Cultural Domínico-Americano celebrate a volunteer conference.

Santo Domingo. – The Embassy of the United States in Santo Domingo and the Instituto Cultural Domínico-Americano celebrated the conference “The Power of Volunteering” as the launch of the Servimos Unidos Program, an initiative to promote volunteering and community service through culture and the arts.

Timothy Brown, Acting Counselor for Public Affairs at the Embassy of the United States, highlighted the importance of volunteering and expressed that at the embassy, ‘we believe in Dominican youth. We believe that when a young person breaks away from the social mold around them, demonstrates leadership, that young person can access opportunities for advancement and growth.’ He also emphasized that ‘Volunteering challenges us beyond complaint and protest, and involves us in solutions. Volunteering is a response to apathy.’

This conference featured presentations and discussions focused on promoting volunteering as one of the key values of American culture, as well as promoting equity, encouraging community service among youth, and sharing best practices for leading and developing volunteer programs among entrepreneurs and organizations.

More than 150 students and local organizations participated in the conference, which included presentations and panels by representatives from the Embassy of the United States, former recipients of U.S. government programs, and Peace Corps volunteers from the United States in the Dominican Republic, as well as civil society organizations such as Alianza ONG, Red Sirve Quisqueya, TECHO Foundation, Guardians of Democracy, and Diverse Dominican.
