The Cultural Institute Domínico Americano inaugurates a modern sports and recreational complex
Santo Domingo, September 2023 – The Cultural Institute Domínico Americano (ICDA) marked an important milestone in its history of over 76 years by inaugurating a modern sports and recreational complex on its main campus on Abraham Lincoln Avenue in Santo Domingo.
The inauguration event was led by Mr. Darío Lama, President of the Board of Directors, and Engineer Ramón Sosa, Executive Director of the ICDA, and was attended by members of its educational and cultural community, including parents, students, teaching staff, and administrative personnel.
With over 2,000 square meters of construction, the Domínico Americano Sports Complex is a versatile space that can accommodate over 1,500 people at ceremonial events and over 250 attendees at sporting activities. This complex is equipped with state-of-the-art technology suitable for sports and recreational events, including courts and boards approved by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) for grade 2 competitions.
A highlight of this sports complex is its commitment to sustainability. Solar panels have been installed to complement the renewable energy initiatives already implemented by the institution, underscoring its commitment to responsible resource use.
In an emotional moment during the inauguration, homage was paid to Engineer José del Carmen Ariza, who was a member and president of the Board of Directors of the Cultural Institute Domínico Americano from 1990 to 2019. In his honor, the sports complex bears his name, thus recognizing his valuable contribution to the institution.
The event program also featured the sports teams of the Domínico Americano School, accompanied by cheerleaders who will energize every game and activity in which our talented athletes participate. Additionally, it was a special moment when the sports mascot was revealed: the “Cougar,” personifying the intelligence, talent, honor, leadership, intuition, and spirit of Domínico Americano.
The Domínico Americano Sports Complex will be the venue for a variety of sports disciplines, including basketball, volleyball, and soccer, and will be open to the entire community that is part of the institution’s academic programs, including the Domínico Americano University (UNICDA), the Domínico Americano School & Preschool, and the Language School. The aim is to enrich the students’ sports training and development.
In addition to serving the educational community of the ICDA, the sports complex plans to offer activities for the external community, such as tournaments and sports exchanges, e-sports events, training sessions, and talks with recognized athletes, among other initiatives
